A German executive is about to be transferred to a subsidiary company in England. V Listen to the following conversation in which an English colleague tells him what to expect when he gets there.

A. I suppose I'd better tell you about the English now. I'd say you'll find your English colleagues very easy to get on with and pretty tolerant. Oh, by the way don't expect to start work too early; quite honestly it's usually 9.15 before much happens in an English office.

B. I'm glad you told me that. As you know we start a lot earlier here.

A. Right. I thought I'd better warn you. Don't get to office too early on your first day. You'll probably won't find the building open.

B. O.k., you were telling me about the people.

A. Oh, yes. You may well find them .. . mm... a bit reserved at first. They may not be too friendly to begin with and they sometimes seem to be a bit.. .mm.. .cool towards foreigners. f

B. I see. Then I mustn't expect to be invited to dinner during the first week.

A. And I wouldn't bank on an invitation the first month either.

B. Really?

A. Yes, I'm afraid so. But mind you, once they do get to know you English people are very hospitable. They really put themselves out for you.

B. And... when I go to their home should I take a gift? A bottle of schnapps perhaps?

A.Ah... mm, no, I wouldn't do that if I were you. Flowers would be safer. You never know, your host might not drink alcohol. Then you'd start the evening wrong from the first foot.

B. Yes, I certainly wouldn't want to..., how d'you say, put my foot in it.
