I. CONVERSATION PRACTICE

GRAMMAR: How to express ability and possibility?

Why don't you...?

You'd better (rather)...

Can't I persuade you...?

Won't you... please?

It's in your interests to...

I think this information is incorrect.

I'm sorry, there has been some misunderstanding.

You are mistaken, if I may say so.

I really do have to correct you.

As far as I know.

As a matter of fact.

In my opinion you should correct it.

I think it may be more accurate to say ...

May I assure you...

Please, don't worry.

Take it easy.

Don't get upset.

Keep cool.

Cheer up!

Come on!

It's O.K.!

A.

- Why don't you try to enter the university? You are smart and hardworking.

- I have already applied for admission and now I'm working hard to get ready for my entrance exams.

B.

- It's in your interests to call Mr. Green. He has promised me to help you, why don't you call him up just now?

- Keep cool; I have already got in touch with Mr. Green. He does want to help me and I'm sure everything will be O.K.

C.

- Can't I persuade you not to quarrel with your sister? As a matter of fact you are sometimes too stubborn and hot-tempered.

- Take it easy! To my mind you take our quarrels too seriously, very often it's just a joke.

3. Complete the dialogues:

A.

- Can't I persuade you to join us tonight? The party is going to be exciting!

- …

B.

- …

- I'm sorry, there has been some misunderstanding. Mr. Morgan is my uncle, not my father.

C.

- …

- Don't get upset. We have enough time before the train starts. Believe me, Tom will be here in a minute.

4. Try to persuade your friend to do the following things:

- Ask his girl friend to marry him

- Go to the mountains with you

- Take part in the students' championship

- Buy a new computer

- Spend the coming weekend with his parents

- Make certain inquiries in the tourist company about the most interesting voyages

- Help your university friend to build a summer house

- Get ready for exams together

- Lend you some money

- Share a room in the dorm with you

- Go to the nearest supermarket and buy you a blouse or a suit.

5. Make up a dialogue and then act it out.

Customer: Ask the shop assistant to show you a blouse/suit.

Shop assistant: Ask about the size.

C.: Tell your size.

S.: Say that you have only big sizes.

C. Ask when they are going to get small ones.

S.: Answer. (tomorrow, next week etc. )

C.; Say you'll come next time.

S.: Ask the customer to phone and give the telephone number.

C.: Thank the shop assistant and leave.
