Recommendations for interpreters

Contextual relationships of the meaningful elements in oral discourse play a key role in successful interpretation of messages. Thus, anaphoric and cataphoric relationships provide for lexical coherence of discourse, while exophoric relationships ensure links with the macro context. Therefore, interpreters have to be aware of the following:

a) anaphoric relationships often help to reconstruct the units of discourse that have been misheard or misunderstood, i.e. they help interpreter fill in the “gaps” in his/her perception of oral discourse (incoming messages) and play an important part in ensuring self-control and self-correction in interpreting;

b) cataphoric relationships play a key role in ensuring efficiency of the so-called “anticipation” (імовірнісне прогнозування) which is one of the key instruments of simultaneous interpreting;

c) exophoric relationships are part and parcel of the interpreter's knowledge of the subject field of interpreting, his/her knowledge about “the world” and personal cultural competence in the broadest sense of this word.

Practical assignments

Assignment 1. Study the following text fragments and define types of contexts relevant for the underlined words. Explain how the contexts you have defined may help interpreters do their job. Suggest your analysis of other contextual relationships in these fragments.

1) – Мій батько був адвокатом. У радянський час, після закінчення Київського університету святого Володимира працював в адвокатурі. Тому я вже з дитинства мав уявлення про адвокатську діяльність. Але адвокатом ставати не збирався, мене приваблювала інша муза – Мельпомена: у 1939 році, закінчивши десятирічку, я вступав до театрального інституту в Москві. Спочатку спробував вступити до ДІТМ – провалився. Потім – до знаменитого сьогодні училища імені Щукіна при Вахтанговському театрі. Однак мій батько був людиною трохи консервативних поглядів, і якщо він ще терпів таку назву, як Державний інститут театрального мистецтва імені Луначарського, то слово “училище” він сприймав як щось жахливе.

2) – I think we should have a free trade area covering both NAFTA, and that's a North American Free Trade Area, and the Common Market. That then would underpin NATO.

–Let's have a two-tier system and let's be part of the European free trade area rather than the hard-core European Union…

– But how do we persuade eleven other, fourteen other reluctant countries? Why should they agree to do these things?

– They want to go further than Maastricht. And to me that is ridiculous. If they want to do it, I don't believe we should stop them, provided they let us do what we want to do. So we consent to them forming their own particular arrangement but we are excluded.

– You'd have to admit that 1972 Act… . We have shown so many times we won't give up Parliament … .

– Why didn't you do that while you were in power?

– First, because I think the whole magnitude of it hadn't been realized. We wanted a single market. I fought for single market and I put certain protections in thesingle market which are not being honoured.
