The question is why so many sports are so popular in the United States. One reason may be that the variety and size of America and the different climates found in it have provided Americans with a large choice of summer and winter sports. Besides a great number of sports facilities have always been at the disposal of people there. The fact that the high school, too, offers its students a lot of sports, including rowing, tennis, wrestling, golf may have contributed to the wide participation of Americans in sports. This, in turn, may explain why Americans have traditionally done well internationally in many of these sports.

Why did Ben accept the invitation to spend a weekend at the Thayers' when he hated staying at somebody else's house?

Ben accepted the invitation, because he was too tired and bothered a lot, and the Thayers promised him that he won't be disturbed at all. And that their house would be a “Liberty Hall” for the Drakes. They promised to protect him from the producers and publishers.

I really would say that the day Ben spent at the Thayers' was rather trying for him, because instead of peace he was promised, he was bothered with silly questions. The Thayers prevented him from doing what he wanted: the book he wanted to read, the music he wanted to listen to, the cigarettes he liked.

Though they thought they entertained their guests properly, the effect of this hospitality was quite negative and annoying. They irritated him, didn't give him a minute's peace. While the real hospitality implies to please your guests in every possible way.

How did Mr. Drake use the popular belief that geniuses are eccentric?

Mr. Drake used the popular belief as an excuse to curtail his visiting and leave their house without hurting the hostess. When he understood that the scheme he hit on didn't work, he decided to tell that he had premonitions and hunches, which was eccentric for the hostess, who was lacking a sense of humor. He had a hunch that he was needed in New York. This scared the hostess and she decided that it was her duty to let him go and even to apologize for concealing the telegram which was intended for him.

Why did M. Lautisse accept the Greggs' invitation to spend a weekend in their home?

M. Lautisse took to the young couple, besides they didn't care for art, so he knew that they wouldn't bother him with silly questions about his work. He hadn't been painting for many years and was heard to say he would never touch another brush as long as he lived. He was traveling incognito. It was clear that they were going to respect his wish and keep his name a secret. Besides, they didn't care very much whether he was famous artist or not. They just invited him because they liked him as a person. They promised to let him do what he wanted and so they did. When M. Lautisse wanted to paint a fence Mr. Gregg let him do it even he didn't want to. As his wife said M. Lautisse was having a good time, so Mr. Gregg had to give up.
