applicant–a person who applies for a job or a place at a university or for official permission to do something

job application –a formal, usually written, request to be considered for a job

curriculum vitae CV (GB) or resume (US) –a document giving details of your education and past employment, used when you are applying for a job

employment agency –a business that works for organizations to find people for jobs when the organizations need them

interview –a formal meeting at which someone is asked questions to find out whether they are suitable for a job

give notice –inform your employer that you will be leaving the company ( as soon as your contract allows)

job descriptionalso job specification –anofficial list of the work and responsibilities you have in your job

job vacancy –a job that is available for someone to start doing

reference –a letter written by someone who knows you well, usually to a new employer, giving information about your character, abilities, or qualifications

short list –a preliminary selection of candidates, chosen to have/get an interview

headhunt –to find a manager with the right skills and experience to do a particular job, often by persuading a suitable person to leave their present job

follow up –to do something as a result of something someone has suggested or something you have found out

covering letter (GB), cover letter (US)–a letter that you send with your documents or a package, explaining why the package has been sent or giving extra information about it

resign –to officially leave a job, position etc through your own choice, rather than being told to leave

extend –to increase the period of time for which an agreement, contract etc is effective; to make something bigger or increase its range

be awarded a PhD– to get a degree of Doctor of Philosophy; a high level university degree, which you get by doing original research, usually for three or more years, and writing a thesis
