The Americans express their culture through traditions in food, clothing, recreation, ceremonies. Also through the education system and institutions of learning, including museums, libraries and as well as through the arts, including the visual, literary and performing arts. American culture is rich, complex and unique. It emerged from rather short and rapid European contest of an enormous landmass sparsely settled by diverse indigenous people. European's influence was important, but Asian countries also had some. American culture as a result possesses a unique mixture of patters forged by many peoples. Its complexity created a society that struggles to achieve tolerance on the one hand and produces a uniquely casual personal hand on the other hand. While America is probably most well-known for its popular arts, Americans partake an enormous range of cultural activities. Besides being avid readers of a great variety of books and magazines catering for different interests, Americans like to attend museums, operas and ballets in large numbers. They listen to various music. Americans attend and participate in plenty of sports. They enjoy food from a wide range of foreign cuisines. American culture has come to symbolize what is most up-to-date and modern. In this context we speak of Americanization. American culture has become international. Today American culture often sets the pace.

For much of its early history the USA was considered culturally provincial, and its art were considered second-rate. European artists were defined as quality artists, and American artists learned from them. In the late 18th century some American artists produced high-quality art such as the paintings of John Singleton Copley and Gilbert Charles Stuart. But wealthy Americans still preferred works by European artists and items from abroad.

Throughout the 19th century Americans read and imitated European and especially British novels and poetry.

American culture first developed a unique voice during the 19th century. It included a cultural identity that was strongly connected to nature and the divine mission. The writers proposed that the American character is deeply individualistic. Many of the writers of the 19th century also influenced this tradition. Whitman described American freedom, diversity.

Landscape paintings captured the unique American identity with its emphasis on the environment. These paintings were often enveloped in a radiant light suggesting some connection to spiritual sources.

Americans were concerned about natural environment. Naturalists such as John Muir took part in establishing the first national parks.

By the early 20th century as the USA became an international power, its cultural self-identity became more complex. American social diversity began to find significant…………..god I cant write that……Artists change the essence of American experience. During the 1920s-1930s poets contributed to the American voice.

Painters and photographers focused on picturesque parts of the city, but the nature remained an important part, though no longer the heart of American culture.

Songs of many nations became American songs. Tin Pan Alley is the center of music at the 20th century. Some song writers used their music to define American patriotic songs and holiday traditions. Jazz began to dominate the rhythms, having its roots in Africa. Black artists and musicians became the instruments of the classical American sounds.
