TOPIC 13: East-West: from Helsinki until the collapse of the USSR TOPIC 12: Changes in relations between East and West 1962-1972 This lecture focuses on the changes in the Soviet American relations after the Cuban Missile Crisis, decrease of tensions, Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty 1968, Strategic Arms Limitation talks (SALT I and SALT II) and their meaning for the international peace and security. We also touch upon the Arab-Israeli conflict, its causes and effects on the politics in the Middle East. We also examine the start of the European integration processes. This lecture focuses on Helsinki Accords as the declaration in an attempt to improve relations between the Communist bloc and the West, and its groundwork for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). We also discuss the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan, Soviet –American relations in the early 1980's, Gorbachev as the new leader of the USSR, his reforms and their effects, the collapse of the USSR, its reasons and contributing factors. We also examine the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979, the Iranian Hostage Crisis as Jimmy Carter's political failure. This lecture focuses on the post-Cold War world and the collapse of the bipolar system of international relations. We discuss new concepts of security and various regional conflicts with the special focus on Yugoslavia. We also examine democratization and globalization processes as contributing factors to the new system of international relations.
