RENDERING OF THE CONTEXTUAL MEANINGS OF THE DEFINITE AND INDEFINITE ARTICLES

Date: 2015-10-07; view: 633.

Synopsis 6

The article is a functional word serving to identify the noun (to work - the work), the superlative degree of its quality (the tallest tree) or the order (the first step). In some prepositional phrases and word-combinations the articles may become a particle (themore, thebetter – чим більше, тим краще), or acquire peculiar grammatical, functional and lexical meaning (theBrowns- подружжя Браунів); the article may be lexicalized as in the Alps-Альпи, at the butcher's у м'ясника (в м'ясному магазині). The determining and lexicalizing nature of the articles also manifests itself in several set expressions (cf. in the cart, in a word, what a pity, all of a sudden).

On several occasions the definite/indefinite article may acquire lexical meaning in contextual environment (only for a time) and thus serve as a peculiar means of «expressive connotation»:Carot never sold a picture. - Каро не продав ні однієї картини.

The meanings of the definite article are usually expressed through pronouns, adjectives, participles, adverbs or numerals. The meaning of the numeral one is always expressed only through the indefinite article: Most of fellows in the Quarters share a studio. - Багато хлопців з латинського кварталу орендують гуртом одну студію.

The articles are mostly rendered through the parts of speech having the functions of attributes to the noun: I believe that a young person in a city tea-shop has left her situation. - Гадаю, в одній із кав'ярень якась офіціантка зникла.

The emphatically used articles have usually particles for their contextual equivalents in Ukrainian: But I must content myself with a few paragraphs. - Жаль, що я маю обмежитись лише кількома епізодами.
