Tver State Medical Academy as a higher medical education institution offers professional education in medicine (including pediatrics), dentistry and pharmacy. The Academy cannot set its own admission criteria and student selection procedure. They are identical all over the country. Academy admission is highly competitive and annual intake quotas limit enrollment. No entrance examinations are included in the selection process. The applicants submit the results of their secondary school final examinations in Chemistry, Biology and Russian. Those with the highest scores are admitted to the Academy. Basic medical education takes 6 years. The first two years are mostly devoted to pre-clinical (theoretical or fundamental) courses that are essential for any medical specialty. The students have lectures in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Human Anatomy, Normal Physiology, Histology and other subjects. They also have practical and laboratory classes in small groups to review and discuss the main concepts. Medical specialization starts in the 3rd year of studies. The curriculum includes Propedeutics, Biochemistry and Pathology (Pathological Anatomy and Pathological Physiology), clinical and special subjects. Some of the classes are hospital-based. During the 3rd, 4th and 5th years, students perform clinical work as nurses and clinical assistants at the primary health care level. They are taught to use their knowledge, develop professional skills, master up-to-date methods of diagnostics and treatment, and become familiar with all the work they will do in the future. In the 6th year, medical students choose their primary specialization in one of the following clinical subjects: therapy, surgery or obstetrics and gynecology. After 6 years of medical education, Russian students take a state examination according to the state standards, obtain a Doctor's Diploma, and complete a one-year internship in medical units under supervision of specialists. Instruction in Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Gastroenterology, Dietology, Endocrinology, Clinical Biochemistry, Physiotherapy, and aspects of Surgery such as Oncology and Neurosurgery is provided by the appropriate departments. Annually, about 60,000 students graduate from Russian medical schools.
