SUMMARY

Mark Melcher was a respected, dignified kind man, Willowville's best loved citizen. He had lived in this small American town for 22 years when a new young teacher Emily Holden, a nice girl of 22, arrived in the place and fell in love with Old Man Fellows, the head of the school board and the richest man in the town.

Once Emily came to the drugstore all in tears and told Mark her sad story. Old Man Fellows had deceived her and threatened to tell something awful, he knew about her. Mark cashed a big sum of money and sent her to New York to some lady who might help her. He murdered Old Man fellows with prussic acid, having changed the usual eye drops, he used for the poison. He wanted to confess to the sheriff and get the punishment he deserved. But nobody in the town believed that it was a murder, all the people were sure that it was a mistake and Mark went mad because of this tragedy. He was sent to the sanatorium but nobody in the town found out that Emily was his daughter, Mark had never been married and Old Man Fellows was the only man who knew it.
