PASSENGER AND BAGGAGE HANDLING

Date: 2015-10-07; view: 488.

Text 1.

An air terminal provides all necessary services for air travellers as they move from a parking lot to the waiting aircraft. On the ground floor there are usually departure and arrival halls and on the first floor - a contemporary lounge, buffets, bars, shops and administrative offices. A general inquiry counter faces the main entrance and clear directional signs guide passengers to the ticket sales, check-in desks, reservations counters and other amenities. In addition to the facilities directly for the passengers to use, other conveniences, including restaurants, newsstands, gift shops are available, as is an observation deck for watching aircraft land and depart.

Once inside the terminal1, the outgoing passenger proceeds to the ticket counter where he receives his ticket. In the departure hall there are check-in desks for the passengers, who have previously purchased tickets, to report. Some two hours before their flight time the departing passengers proceed to an appropriate counter to check their tickets and luggage. When their flight is called the passengers proceed to the appropriate gate where they will board the aircraft. Most large airports have several gates with individual lounge areas. Often the passengers can board .the plane directly from the lounge without going outside» Tubes, fingers or inclosed ramps, propelled by self-contained motors, "telescope" out to the door of the aircraft.

To minimize the passenger walking distances and provide the maximum amount of speed in transporting passengers to the waiting aircraft such innovations as intra- airport transportation systems (Airtrans), mobile lounges, moving sidewalks, automated people movers, sometimes referred to as horizontal elevators, are being used.

Baggage handling at the airport has been reduced to a minimum. The baggage department makes it simple for the passenger to secure his luggage. As the outgoing passengers check In on arrival at the airport, their luggage is weighed, labeled and the electrically operated conveyor belts transfer the luggage behind the scenes to a dock where it is grouped according to the flight, loaded on special trucks and sent to the waiting aircraft. Incoming passengers de-plane and collect their baggage at the baggage-claim area, just near the entrance.

The air traffic is constantly growing. During peak hours more than 10,000 pieces of luggage have to be handled. At such rates it is virtually impossible to transport luggage in the conventional manner. Besides, transit passengers constitute a considerable share of the total passenger volume. The luggage of transit passengers must change the aircraft as speedy as possible. To meet these requirements at Frankfurt airport, for example, an electronically controlled and fully automatic luggage conveyor system has been selected. Right after entering the departure hall, the — passenger checks in his luggage, which is put on the coded shallow pallet. Via a key board, the flight number is fed to the computer in the control centre. The rest is taken care of electronically. The pallets, carrying the luggage, are moved to the aircraft positions or to the arrival hall by means of fast moving conveyors at a speed of up to 2.5 meters per second.

The air traffic may be accelerated below the surface with all baggage being moved between the concourse and the baggage handling area at the ground floor level by mechanically or electrically operated conveyor belts.

Once inside the terminal - войдя в аэровокзал
